Specification for Vaned Flow Conditioning Baskets
1. General Requirements
1.1. Flow Conditioning Basket Design
- The pump manufacturer shall provide vaned flow conditioning baskets as specified for all vertical turbine and axial flow pumps with intake bells of 11 inches (279 mm) and larger.
2. Design Approval
2.1. Hydraulics Laboratory Approval
- The basket design must be approved by a nationally recognized hydraulics testing laboratory.
2.2. Physical Hydraulic Modeling (for sizes larger than 18 inches [450 mm]):
- Provide a design based on physical hydraulic modeling conducted by a nationally recognized hydraulics laboratory.
3. Certified Drawings
3.1. Submittal Requirements
- Submit a certified drawing for all baskets as part of the pump submittal.
- Include the following details:
- Dimensions
- Material specifications
- Clearance and spacing details
4. Basket Design Criteria
4.1. Clearance and Dimensions
- Minimum Clearance: 4 inches (100 mm) from the intake floor.
- Minimum Basket Height: Equal to the intake bell outside diameter (D) divided by three (D/3).
4.2. Vane Spacing
- Vane spacing varies based on diameter but must not exceed 15 degrees.
4.3. Bottom Grating
- Aspect Ratio (Depth to Spacing): 1:1.
- Open Area: Minimum of 75%.
4.4. Headloss Coefficient (K)
- Maximum of 0.70.
4.5. Material
- Type 316L stainless steel.
5. Installation and Coordination
5.1. Basket Securing Method
- The pump manufacturer must coordinate the method of securing the basket to the pump intake bell.
