What Is an Eddy?

An eddy, in fluid dynamics, refers to a swirling motion that deviates from the primary flow path. Eddies typically occur in turbulent flow regimes when fluid encounters obstacles. As the fluid passes the obstruction, it creates downstream voids where the primary flow is absent. These voids draw in surrounding fluid, creating swirling patterns on either side of the obstacle. A reverse current can also form, flowing back toward the obstacle’s rear, further contributing to the characteristic eddy formation.
