Fowler Water Reclamation Facility – Forsyth County, Georgia

The Flow Optimizer Pump Suction Extension with Integrated Bellmouth enhances pump performance by optimizing fluid flow at the Fowler Water Reclamation Facility in Cumming, GA. Designed to prevent ragging and improve efficiency, these extensions were engineered, fabricated, and delivered within an impressive three-week timeframe.

Project Details

Problem:

The submersible pumps were experiencing reduced flow due to rag accumulation at the inlet, which occurred within 4 to 12 hours after startup. The rag accumulation significantly hindered pump performance.

Diagnosis:

  • Excessive Distance: The gap between the floor of the wet well and the pump inlet was too large, which allowed rags to accumulate in the pump station.
  • Low Inlet Velocity: The lack of sufficient inlet velocity resulted in rag balls forming at the pump’s suction inlet, further restricting flow.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Suction Extension Tube: The solution proposed was to install a Pump Suction Extension Tube with an integrated bellmouth and a Flow Optimizer Floor Cone placed under the bellmouth to optimize flow.

Practicality Issues:

  • The wet well couldn’t be drained to install the Flow Optimizer Cone, so the decision was made to only install the Pump Suction Extension Tubes.

Results:

  1. Improved Velocity Profile: The installation of the Pump Suction Extension Tube created an improved velocity profile, which helped guide the rags into the pump, enabling the pump to handle them more effectively.
  2. Self-Cleaning Wet Well: By lowering the suction point, the Pump Suction Extension Tube prevented rags from settling at the bottom of the wet well. This helped in self-cleaning, as the pump could now clear the accumulated rags more efficiently.

Conclusion:

The solution of installing the Pump Suction Extension Tube proved effective in resolving the rag accumulation issue by improving the velocity at the pump inlet and helping to maintain pump performance over time.

What is a Pump Suction Extension with Integrated Bellmouth?

A Pump Suction Extension with Integrated Bellmouth is a specialized component designed to enhance pump suction efficiency by eliminating ragging and optimizing flow conditions. The bellmouth feature ensures smooth fluid entry, reducing turbulence and improving pump longevity.

Key Benefits

Prevents Ragging: Keeps debris from accumulating at the pump suction inlet.
Enhances Flow Efficiency: Ensures a smooth, unrestricted flow into the pump.
Minimizes Maintenance Needs: Reduces downtime caused by blockages.
Custom-Engineered: Designed, fabricated, and delivered in just three weeks.

Customer Testimonial

Monty Scott, National Sales Manager, EBARA Pumps Americas Corporation

“I wanted to touch base with you regarding the Suction Bell Extensions that were installed on our pumps last Tuesday (Jan. 14). They have been running for a week, and the pumps have not had any ragging in the suction of the pump to date. In the past, they would experience rag balls in a very short time span (5 minutes – 16 hours), so everything continues to look positive.

I do want to thank you very much for all your help and for all your quick responses, quick reactions, etc. Y’all have been outstanding!”
